Stephanie PolutnikStephanie Frances Polutnik (nee Turk), 98, of Elyria Township, passed away at the New Life Hospice Center after a brief illness. Stephanie was born in Vrhnika, Slovenia on August 16, 1919. At the age of eight, she traveled on the SS Île de France with her mother and sister Mary and entered the US through Ellis Island on June 5, 1928, an important date for her family. Stephanie loved music and knew all the verses to hundreds of Slovenian songs, harmonizing even as a child with her father and entertaining family and friends with her beautiful, strong alto voice wherever Slovenian music might be playing as recently as last month. In her 90's she joined the group Seniors Sing that entertains at nursing homes in Lorain County and was usually a featured soloist.

Stephanie had a zest for life and lived it to the fullest. She found her greatest joy in family times, always bringing her radiant smile, her positive attitude, a clever sense of humor and a curiosity that kept her young. Because she only looked for the good in everyone, she always found it and she touched the hearts of everyone fortunate enough to have known her.

In her mid-forties, Stephanie attended St. Joseph's School of Practical Nursing and earned her LPN diploma. Through the years, she enjoyed traveling, playing cribbage, working all of the puzzles in the paper, catching perch and walleye on Lake Erie with her husband Michael, bowling, and watching the Cleveland sports teams. She was a lifelong member of Slovenian groups, including KSKJ and AMLA and the Slovenian Women's Union.

The nut tortes she baked for family birthdays, her Slovenian potica and her apple strudel were all amazing, but her hugs were the world's best. Her family will miss the way she said “I love you” every single time she saw them.

A founding member of St. Vincent de Paul Church, Stephanie was a devout Catholic and loved Father Don Dunson and her many friends in the parish. For many years she was a black jack dealer at the annual church carnival and baked for bingo once a month until she turned 90. She was one-of-a-kind!

Stephanie is survived by her daughter Elaine Barthelemy of Apple Valley, Minnesota, sons Michael (JoAnne) Polutnik of Sheffield Village, John (Judy) Polutnik and Robert Polutnik of Avon, grandchildren Rachel, Mark, Stephen, Jennifer, Stephanie, Matthew and Laura as well as 13 great-grandchildren (with #14 due on her birthday) and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Polutnik, parents, Joseph and Mary Turk of Girard, Ohio, sisters Mary Bradish, Josephine Robsel, and Veronica Marsico and daughter-in-law Jane Polutnik.

The family will receive friends at the Reichlin-Roberts Funeral Home at 327 Cleveland Street, Elyria, Ohio on Wednesday, January 31 from 4-7. The funeral Mass will be on Thursday, February 1st at 10:00 a.m. St. Vincent de Paul Church, 49125 North Ridge Road, Elyria with the Reverend Father Donald Dunson, Pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Lorain, Ohio.

Memorials can be made to the St. Vincent de Paul building fund or to the charity of your choice.

Although, I only met Stephanie a few years ago at the USA convention in Illinois, it felt like I have known her all my life. She really impressed me not only with the knowledge and memorization of so many songs and once I learned of her age, it just blew my mind. What a beautiful soul and an inspiration to all of us. I was looking forward to her 100th birthday. She will always be remembered. My condolences to the entire family.
