Merle "Jean" Wacker Print E-mail

Merle "Jean" Wacker (nee Hodgkiss) passed peacefully Sunday, January 21, 2018 at the age of 92 surrounded by family and friends. Born March 10, 1925 in Swissvale, PA, Jean married Merle F. Wacker in her 20's and moved to Elyria in 1946, where she focused on caring for her family and where she lived the rest of her life. When her children were grown, she worked for several years at Murray Ridge School as a teacher's aide and was loved by all the students; she retired in the '90's.

Jean enjoyed searching for old books, reading adventure and historical stories and playing cards with her friends. She loved kids and animals and especially enjoyed the birds that would visit her yard. She enjoyed gardening and was particularly fond of the blue forget-me-nots that flourished around her home. She loved her books and old movies and, after losing her eyesight, listened to many of her favorite stories on the Talking Books Service through the Cleveland Public Library. She was a believer in social justice and responsibility; she loved her country and her kids, all kids, and particularly her job teaching the kids at Murray Ridge School.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, Merl George and Uma Jean (Thursby) Hodgkiss and son-in-law, Christopher Barrett. She is survived by a son, Terry P. Wacker, a daughter, Christine E. Barrett, both of Elyria, her sister, Alice Hodgkiss Guthrie of Ft. Myers, FL, and several nieces and nephews.

A private service was held at Reichlin-Roberts Funeral Home followed by burial at St. Mary's Cemetery, Elyria. Memorial donations may be made to Friendship Animal Protective League, New Life Hospice or a charity of one's choice.
