Phyllis SchmidtPhyllis Schmidt (nee Yunker), of Elyria, died at home on April 28, 2018.

Phyllis built her life on a foundation of raising her family, involvement in her parish, St. Vincent de Paul, and volunteer community work. Phyllis was proud of her five children—a writer, a tax specialist, a professor, a health IT executive, and a social worker. She helped four of them manage swimming lessons, which were taught in the family's backyard pool.

At St. Vincent de Paul, she was a past president of the Altar and Rosary Society and coordinated and managed bingo workers for 33 years. She was also a lector and Eucharistic minister. She was a secretary to the National Council of Catholic Women and served on the board of the Catholic Social Service Bureau.

Phyllis was active in activities involving her children including Girl Scout leader and Cub Scout den mother. She was one of the longest-serving volunteers at The Elyria Hospitality Center, where she worked regularly until 2015. She was also served as secretary of its board of directors. Phyllis supported the work of Catholic missionaries, and helped build two chapels in India and one in the Philippines.

After graduating from Elyria High School in 1942, Phyllis worked as a secretary for the National Society for Crippled Children in Elyria. Three years later, she started her own business, The Letter Shop, in Elyria, which provided secretarial services. She was a charter member of the Elyria Quota Club. In the early 1980s, she worked as a secretary at Lake Ridge Academy.

Phyllis enjoyed dancing, playing cards, swimming, bicycling and flower arranging. She traveled to Israel, France, Ireland, and Mexico.

She is survived by her husband, Eddie, to whom she was married for 70 years and four children, Peggy Schmidt (Joseph Tabacco) of Portola Valley, California, Gary (Tonia) of Alpharetta, Georgia, Tom (Susan) of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Catherine (nee Aspacher) Schmidt of Long Beach, California, and Sherie McCaffrey (Sean) of Elyria; 11 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Loretta Myers and Elizabeth Blair, both of Elyria.

Phyllis was preceded in death by a son, Robert in 1995, her parents, Frank and Loretta (nee Webber), sister Rita Crozier, and brothers Ray, Donald, and Lawrence.

Friends will be received at Reichlin Roberts Funeral Home, 327 Cleveland St., Elyria from 2-4 PM and 7-9 P.M. on Thursday, May 3. Closing prayers will be Thursday evening rather than on Friday morning. The Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Friday, May 4, at St. Vincent de Paul Church, 41295 North Ridge Road, Elyria. Rev. Donald Dunson will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Elyria. In lieu of flowers, Phyllis requested that donations be made to either St. Vincent de Paul Church or The Elyria Hospitality Center, 244 Third Street, Elyria, Ohio.
