>p>Eddie SchmidtEddie M. Schmidt, 94, of Elyria, died at home Tuesday, August 14, 2018.

Eddie built his life around his family and his work. He was married for 70 years to Phyllis (nee Yunker). He was proud of his five children—a writer, a tax specialist, a professor, an IT manager, and a social worker. For decades, he was the “pool boy” at his backyard pool, where four of his children taught swimming lessons.

Eddie graduated from Lorain High School in 1941B. He worked as a timekeeper at General Industries before and after serving in the military. He earned his pilot’s wings and flew ten missions in a B-25 over Italy for the Army Air Force in World War II. He was awarded the Air Medal, American Theatre Ribbon, and the World War II Victory Medal. He also served as flight instructor on PT19s. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 1079 and a member of the American Legion, Post 12.

He worked as a nursing home administrator at the Lorain Convalescent Home, a business his family owned, until its sale in 1980. He was a past president of the Lorain County Nursing Home Association. His smile and easy laugh served him well during his many years as a realtor. He worked at Lehman Johnson, Smythe Cramer, and Howard Hannah until he was 85. He was a member of the Lorain County Association of Realtors.

Eddie enjoyed dancing, playing cards, reading novels, and traveling. His two favorite vacation destinations were Wildwood, New Jersey, and the resorts of Mexico. He was a parishioner of St. Vincent de Paul Church, where he was a member of the Holy Name Society.

He is survived by four children, Peggy Schmidt (Joseph Tabacco) of Portola Valley, CA; Gary (Tonia) of Alpharetta, Georgia; Tom (Susan) of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Sherie McCaffrey (Sean) of Elyria; daughter-in-law Catherine (nee Aspacher) Schmidt of Long Beach, CA; 11 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Eddie was preceded in death by his wife Phyllis on April 28, 2018, son Robert in 1995, his parents, Edward and Donnabelle (nee Fields), sisters Betty Fedor and Ruth Snyder, and brother Albert.

Friends will be received at the Reichlin Funeral Home, 327 Cleveland St., Elyria on Sunday, August 19 from 3 to 6 P.M. Closing prayers will be at the funeral home on Sunday rather than Monday morning. The Mass will be celebrated at 10 A.M., Monday, August 20, 2018 at St. Vincent de Paul Church, 41295 North Ridge Road, Elyria. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Elyria. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Vincent de Paul Church or Valor Home Lorain, which offers transitional housing for homeless male veterans (Checks can be sent to: 221 West 21st St., Lorain , Ohio 44052.)

I have been a full time Realtor for the past 41 years. When I first met Eddie I was really impressed by his professional attitude, his easy going way of bringing deals together in real estate. He was extremely kind, considerate and helpful to me on VA Loans and Mobile financing. He was a true friend to all of us in real estate. They don\\\'t make Realtors like Eddie today. He was a born salesman, extremely helpful and kind to clients. I will truly miss his positive attitude and the way he told me how he lived his life. He loved his wife, children and just about everyone he ever met.. Rest in peace Eddie. God never closes one door without opening up another.. Russ Dickerhoff from Russell Real Estate Amherst
